9139: Targeted Pain Treatment – Hope for Patients with Pain

NO FEE

Course Description

This educational activity is based on the East Tennessee PBS documentary “Targeted Pain Treatment: Hope for Patients with Pain”, which explores the evolving landscape of chronic pain management through patient stories, expert physician and practitioner interviews, and clinical strategies.

Chronic pain affects millions of Americans and remains a leading cause of disability, healthcare utilization, and diminished quality of life. This course highlights some challenging patient presentations and the shortcomings of traditional, generalized approaches to pain treatment. The documentary offers real-world patient journeys as well as commentary from pain specialists to illustrate how advances in treatment modalities, including minimally invasive procedures, are enabling practitioners to more precisely identify sources of pain and tailor therapies accordingly. Topics include interventional pain techniques, multidisciplinary care models, risk reduction in opioid prescribing, and the role of innovation in improving function and patient outcomes.

The patient stories underscore that the challenges of managing chronic pain can erode a patient’s ability to function and diminish their sense of hope. Strategies for improved education, advocacy, and access to comprehensive pain management are explored.

Learning Objectives
  1. Identify common limitations of traditional pain management approaches
  2. Differentiate between systemic therapies and localized, interventional approaches
  3. Recognize the role of imaging, clinical assessment, and diagnostic injections in improving pain source identification
