Course Description

This course provides an insight to malpractice risks and trends related to the practice of primary care. Topics include risk issues and concerns in documentation, communication, medications, and systems failures. The presentation will review actual claims, risk associated with those claims, and practical ways to reduce the incidence of a lawsuit and improve patient safety.

  1. Identify current trends and risks in primary care claims
  2. Recognize the potential for miscommunication, inadequate documentation, system failures, and medication errors in the practice of primary care
  3. Describe ways to minimize risk and improve patient safety
Course Format

This course is an online video option. It consists of a one-hour video presentation, followed by a test.

AAFP:  The AAFP has reviewed Primary Care: What’s the Risk in My Practice? and deemed it acceptable for up to 1.00 Enduring Materials, Self-Study AAFP Prescribed credit. Term of Approval is from 01/01/2024 to 12/31/2024. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

***If you are planning to claim AAFP credit for completing this course, you must complete it no later than 12/31/2024. AAFP approval will not be renewed for SVMIC courses completed after that date.

AOA:  This program is eligible for one (1) credit hour in Category 2 of the Continuing Medical Education Program of the American Osteopathic Association. Physicians will need to submit a letter of completion from the University of Tennessee directly to the AOA to receive CME credits, or AOA members may self-report the activity.

Continuing Education for Non-Physicians:  The UTCOM will issue Certificates of Participation to non-physicians for participating in this activity and designates it for CEUs using the national standard that 1 hour of educational instruction is awarded .1 CEU.
