8235: Considerations In Terminating a Patient
No Premium Credit Available and No Payment Required
Maintaining a positive physician-patient relationship is essential for quality care and risk management. When trust or respect breaks down—whether between physician and patient or staff and patient—the situation can become challenging and may lead to termination of the relationship. Improper termination can expose physicians and practices to accusations of patient abandonment, which carry ethical, legal, and professional consequences. This session will explore the concept of patient abandonment, common causes of strained relationships, and practical strategies to manage difficult interactions while minimizing liability. Attendees will gain actionable insights to protect themselves and their practices from claims and litigation.
Objectives:
- Define patient abandonment and explain its legal and ethical implications for physicians.
- Identify factors that contribute to problematic physician-patient and staff-patient relationships.
- Apply effective strategies to manage and de-escalate difficult patient interactions.
- Implement best practices for terminating physician-patient relationships to avoid abandonment claims and reduce litigation risk.
