Course Description

This year’s seminar will explore relationships in medicine, focusing on communication and conflict management as well as enhancing skills that support healthy and effective professional relationships. Positive communication and setting expectations can greatly improve relationships in medicine, including physician to patient, physician to physician, and physician to staff. Participants will engage in learning activities around these topics. This seminar will utilize video vignettes, case discussions, and other interactions to illustrate communication techniques and skills to address and manage challenging interactions in medicine. 

Learning Objectives
  1. Identify challenging factors in professional relationships
  2. Compare and contrast various methods for addressing conflict in professional relationships
  3. Use and apply the HEARD model for conflict management and effective communication
  4. Develop practices that support professional behaviors with the challenging patient

Accreditation:  This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the University of Tennessee College of Medicine (UTCOM) and SVMIC. The UTCOM is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

AMA Credit Designation:  The UTCOM designates this live activity for a maximum of 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

AOA:  This program is eligible for two (2) credit hours in Category 2 of the Continuing Medical Education Program of the American Osteopathic Association. Physicians will need to submit a letter of completion from the University of Tennessee directly to the AOA to receive CME credits, or AOA members may self-report the activity.

AAFP:  The AAFP has reviewed Challenging Relationships in Medicine, and deemed it acceptable for AAFP credit. Term of approval is from 02/07/2023 to 12/31/2023. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Continuing Education for Non-Physicians:  Non-physicians can obtain continuing education credits for attending activities that award AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ to physicians.
